For one day in Venice from Mestre, centre your route on St Mark’s Square, Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal, then choose a museum or church stop. Start by reaching Venice from Mestre, and check attraction hours and ticket rules before setting out so you can plan around the places you want to enter.

  • Begin at St Mark’s Square and check the Basilica’s entry hours.
  • Continue to Rialto Bridge and the market area.
  • Use the Grand Canal as a link between stops, then choose a museum or church.
  • Return to Mestre from Venezia Santa Lucia station.
Before leaving Mestre

Before leaving Mestre

Plan your transfer from Mestre first, then choose a ticket that matches how you expect to travel. Venezia Mestre station is the mainland station to use as your starting point; for station and connection details, consult this guide to Venice and Mestre train stations.

ACTV’s Venezia Daily Pass costs €25 and lasts 24 hours from its first validation. It covers Venice’s municipal waterborne network, mainland buses and trams, the People Mover, and specified Trenitalia regional trains within Venice municipality. It excludes routes 16 and 19, the Casinò route, Alilaguna, and journeys to or from Marco Polo Airport.

If you only need mainland transport, the €5 Mestre Daily Pass covers the mainland urban bus and tram network and specified regional trains within Venice municipality. It is sold through the AVM Venezia Official App and partner apps, and you must activate it before boarding.

ACTV’s standard 75-minute waterborne ticket costs €9.50 and is not valid for journeys to Marco Polo Airport. Check the official site before you go for current ticket conditions.

Start at St Mark’s Square

Start at St Mark’s Square

Hours
both open daily from 9:30 a

St Mark’s Square gives this day route a clear first stop, with St Mark’s Basilica as the main timed visit. The Basilica is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., with last entry at 4:45 p.m. On Sundays and national holy days, it opens from 2:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., with last access at 4:45 p.m.

Book admission for the date and time you intend to enter. The Basilica may refuse entry if the booking details do not match, and the stated tolerance is about five minutes, so arrive in good time for your slot.

If you are planning a Sunday visit, note the later Basilica opening when deciding what to do first. The Basilica’s Museum and Horses Loggia have separate hours: both open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., with last admission at 4:45 p.m.; on Sundays, only the Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Walk to Rialto Bridge and the market area

Walk to Rialto Bridge and the market area

Make Rialto Bridge and the market area your next named stop after St Mark’s Square. This places the bridge between the square visit and your Grand Canal section, keeping the day’s main landmarks in a simple sequence.

The route facts do not set a walking time, so leave room in your schedule rather than relying on a precise transfer estimate.

Follow the Grand Canal

Follow the Grand Canal

Use the Grand Canal as the next part of your day, travelling along the water by vaporetto if that suits your plan. The Venezia Daily Pass includes ACTV’s municipal waterborne network, while the standard 75-minute waterborne ticket is another option for a shorter period of travel.

Choose between these tickets according to how often you expect to use covered services: the daily pass lasts 24 hours from first validation, while the standard ticket lasts 75 minutes. The daily pass has exclusions, including Alilaguna and airport journeys, so check its coverage before boarding.

Choose a museum or church stop

Choose one substantial indoor stop after the outdoor landmarks rather than trying to fit in every museum and church. The Doge’s Palace is open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from 1 April to 31 October, with last admission at 6:00 p.m.

From 1 November to 31 March, it is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last admission at 5:00 p.m. Closing procedures begin 30 minutes before closing.

The St Mark’s Square Museums ticket includes the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr and the National Archaeological Museum of Venice. Check the relevant official site before you go for current opening arrangements and admission details.

Return to Mestre

Finish your Venice visit at Venezia Santa Lucia station for the return journey to Mestre. The Venezia Daily Pass and Mestre Daily Pass both cover specified Trenitalia Regional and Fast Regional trains between Venezia Santa Lucia and named stations within Venice municipality. Confirm that your chosen ticket covers the journey you plan to take.

Venice city centre is roughly 9.6 km from Venice Park House, a guesthouse.
